For López, the hardships endured by generations of Cubans are expressed through the animal as a powerful metaphor for survival, vulnerability, and resilience. The series was inspired by a phrase his mother once told him: "This is a dog's life, son." That simple expression became the conceptual foundation of paintings that examine the emotional weight of endurance and the universal struggle to preserve dignity in the face of adversity.

Drawing deeply from the language, idioms, and rhythms of everyday Cuban life, López rejects folkloric clichés and romanticized or "touristic" portrayals of his homeland. Instead, his work offers an authentic and nuanced perspective on contemporary Cuba, inviting viewers to reflect on memory, identity, and the enduring resilience of the human spirit.
