Donald Sultan is an American contemporary painter, printmaker, and sculptor internationally recognized for transforming familiar botanical and domestic motifs into powerful visual icons. Sultan has spent more than four decades redefining the tradition of still-life painting through a distinctive visual language that combines abstraction, Minimalism, and industrial materials. His signature works—featuring flowers, lemons, mimosas, poppies, eggs, and playing cards—are celebrated for their simplified forms and rich materiality. Working with unconventional media such as tar, vinyl tiles, enamel, flocking, and spackle alongside traditional paint, Sultan challenged conventional distinctions between representation and abstraction while expanding the possibilities of contemporary painting.
